Tea caddy spoons emerged in late 18th-century Britain when tea was an expensive luxury stored in locked caddies. Designed with short handles to fit inside the caddy, these specialised silver spoons were crafted to measure out dried loose tea leaves accurately.

Georgian caddy spoons were predominantly wrought from sterling silver, assayed to meet official purity standards. Artisans employed hand-stamping, bright-cut engraving, and die-striking to create intricate geometric and floral motifs on the spoon bowls and stems.

Authentic pieces carry a full set of British hallmarks, typically including the monarchs profile duty mark, a lion passant indicating sterling purity, a town mark, a date letter, and a makers mark. The weight, hand-cut crispness of the engraving, and characteristic wear patterns also confirm age.

Small antique silver pieces are frequently displayed on tray landscapes, mounted inside shadow box frames, or arranged alongside porcelain and tea ceremony objects on dining sideboards or display cabinets to add historic detail.

Clean silver gently with a specialist silver polishing cloth or mild soapy water, avoiding abrasive pastes that strip fine bright-cut engraving details. Store the spoon in a tarnish-inhibiting cloth bag away from high humidity and direct sunlight.
