An Edwardian bar brooch from the 1900 period takes the form of a rectangular gold metal strip adorned with a detailed wire-work spider motif at the centre. The spider incorporates an oval-cut purple amethyst body alongside a smaller round stone set in bezels, while the reverse holds a secure C clasp fastener. The whole item measures 1.5 cm high and 6 cm wide. Today, wearable accessories of this type serve as subtle decorative accents on lapels, scarves or collars for everyday wear or formal occasions. The gold and purple hues contrast against the neutral textured background visible in the room, while the fine wire limbs and faceted stones demonstrate traditional jewellery crafting techniques of the era without any modern alterations or visible damage.

During the Edwardian era, nature-inspired and novelty jewellery depicting insects such as spiders, beetles, and bees gained popularity, symbolic of good fortune and fine craftsmanship.

Edwardian brooches were typically crafted using 15ct or 18ct gold, platinum, and natural gemstones like amethysts, garnets, and seed pearls mounted on slender bar pins.

Authentic Edwardian brooches often feature specific hallmarks, fine wirework legs, millegrain edging around collet-set gemstones, and long steel or gold pins extending beyond the bar mechanism.

An antique insect brooch can be worn on coat lapels, silk scarves, or velvet ribbons, or displayed in a glass shadow box or velvet jewellery tray.

Clean the piece gently using a soft-bristled brush and lukewarm soapy water, avoiding harsh chemicals, and store it in a dry fabric-lined box to prevent scratches.
