FAQs

During the George III period in eighteenth-century Britain, silver table accessories evolved to include specialized serving items such as shell-shaped butter dishes. Silversmiths modelled these pieces after natural scallop shells, reflecting neoclassical and rococo influences in formal dining.

These dishes were crafted from sterling silver (925 purity) using techniques such as casting, hand-hammering, and fluting to replicate shell ridges. Heraldic crests or monograms were frequently hand-engraved onto the flatter handle portion of the dish.

Authentic British silver from 1794 features a full set of London hallmarks. These include the lion passant for sterling purity, the leopards head for London, the date letter t for 1794, the duty mark showing the monarchs profile, and a registered makers mark.

Small silver shell dishes can be placed on a sideboard, bedside table, or console as refined trays for jewellery, keys, or small keepsakes. They also serve as functional table accents for dining settings.

Maintain sterling silver by dusting with a non-abrasive soft cloth and periodically applying silver polish formulated for antiques. Avoid harsh chemical dips, store in anti-tarnish bags, and keep away from high humidity to prevent rapid oxidisation.
