This eighteenth-century continental pine coffer or trunk combines rustic farmhouse character with functional utility. The piece displays a warm brown finish across its hand-planed timber surfaces, complemented by an iron escutcheon with a key, a plank top with a hinged lid, and carved scroll feet. Extensive signs of old woodworm, losses and age-related wear are visible throughout the structure, which is assembled from broad planks with dovetailed corners. The trunk measures 61 cm high, 165 cm wide and 68 cm deep. Practical for use as storage, the hinged lid opens to a generous interior compartment equipped with a small lidded section to one side. The substantial proportions and timeworn appearance suit placement in hallways, living rooms, or bedrooms as a functional storage chest that introduces historic character to contemporary interiors.

FAQs

A Continental coffer from the 18th century is a large wooden storage chest with a hinged lid, constructed across mainland Europe for storing textiles, household linens, and personal valuables.

These coffers were constructed from solid pine boards joined with hand-cut dovetails or pegs, featuring hand-forged iron escutcheon plates and carved timber legs or feet.

Authentic pieces feature hand-planed wood surfaces, slight timber shrinkage, period-appropriate hand-hammered iron hardware, and irregular hand-cut joinery.

A rustic pine coffer functions as practical storage at the foot of a bed, inside an entrance hallway, or placed as a central coffee table in a living room.

Dust the wood regularly with a dry, lint-free cloth and apply clear beeswax polish occasionally to preserve the timber and protect the original finish.
