This Edwardian sterling silver christening mug comes from the elegant Edwardian era and follows a baluster shape with a curved scroll handle, a polished body, and a bright silver colour. The surface displays floral repousse chasing decoration with flowers, swags, and ribbons, alongside an original inscription on the front and a gilded interior. Soft but readable hallmarks confirm Birmingham manufacture in 1903 by S Blanckensee & Sons Ltd, and the piece shows excellent condition with no dents or splits. Measuring 9 cm high, 9 cm wide, and 7 cm deep, this diminutive silver piece sits comfortably on a sideboard top in a traditional English country house setting. Collectors display such items as decorative keepsakes, or use them as thoughtful traditional gifts for a new arrival.

During the Edwardian era, silver christening mugs were traditionally gifted to infants by godparents to symbolise good fortune and prosperity. These pieces often featured elaborate hand-chased foliage, scroll handles, and polished panels.

They were predominantly crafted from hallmarked sterling silver, sometimes featuring a wash of gilt on the interior lining to protect the metal from acidic liquids.

Authentic pieces bear official British hallmarks, including the town mark, silver purity mark such as the passant lion, makers mark, and date letter corresponding to the reign of King Edward VII between 1901 and 1910.

An antique silver mug can be displayed on a sideboard top or bookshelf as a decorative accent, or repurposed as a vessel for small botanical arrangements and desk accessories.

Clean gently using a soft cloth and specialised silver polish to remove tarnish without stripping the natural oxidation from chased details. Avoid harsh chemicals and ensure the piece is thoroughly dried after washing.
