This Edwardian menu or card holder follows an early George V design from the English Country House style. The piece consists of a hallmarked sterling silver pedestal base with clear hallmarks and a registered number stamp, supporting a circular disc mounted on top. The disc has a cream guilloche enamel face decorated with a painted pheasant in tones of brown, green and blue. The polished silver base has a fluted circular shape and rests on a matching rounded foot. The metal surface shows smooth curves and bright reflections. Measuring 4.5 cm high, 3.5 cm wide and 3.5 cm deep, this compact item functions as a dining table centrepiece to hold place cards, menus or small photographs. It suits traditional dining settings and display cabinets.

Menu card holders became popular during the late Victorian and Edwardian periods with the rise of service a la russe dining, where individual courses were served sequentially and printed menus were placed along the table for guests.

These items were typically constructed from sterling silver or silver gilt, often featuring engine-turned metalwork coated with translucent vitreous enamel, known as guilloche enamel, and decorated with hand-painted motifs.

Authentic pieces generally feature clear silver hallmarks indicating the maker, purity grade, assay office, and date letter, along with registered design numbers stamped into the weighted or solid silver base.

Beyond formal dining table place settings, these small decorative holders can be repurposed on desks or sideboards to display small art prints, photographs, or handwritten name cards.

Silver sections should be gently polished with a soft silver cloth, avoiding abrasive creams near enamel work. Enamel surfaces require mild wiping with a clean, dry, lint-free cloth to prevent chipping or moisture ingress.
