Why Sellingantiques dated this piece to THE 18TH CENTURY:
Copper showing through on raised details: natural wear on fused silver plate.
Neoclassical swags and fluting: favoured Adam design from the late Georgian period.
Weighted bases with lead filling: standard period construction for table candlesticks.
Detachable nozzles with beaded rims: original fittings matching the base borders.

This pair of eighteenth-century English Georgian Old Sheffield plate candlesticks is designed in a neoclassical style using silver plate over copper, presenting a silver and warm copper finish. Each piece has an urn-shaped sconce, a tapered fluted column shaft, and a chamfered stepped square base decorated with beading and festoon swags. The visible condition includes surface wear that reveals the underlying copper material through the silver plating, particularly along the stems and bases. Measuring 28.5 cm high, 11.75 cm wide, and 11.75 cm deep, these sturdy candleholders are perfectly proportioned for practical daily use. In a modern home, they make an impressive focal point placed as a dining table centrepiece during dinner parties, or displayed on a sideboard, mantelpiece, or console table to bring traditional elegance and ambient candlelight to an interior living space.

Old Sheffield plate is a process discovered in the mid-18th century where a sheet of silver was fused onto a copper ingot before being hammered or rolled into flat sheets. This technique allowed for the production of items that closely resembled solid silver at a lower material cost.

These candlesticks were typically made by stamping thin silver-clad copper sheets into decorative dies. The sections were then soldered together, and the hollow interiors were often filled with resin or pitch to add weight and stability.

Authentic pieces often show bleeding, where gentle wear reveals the underlying copper layer through the silver. They typically lack post-1840 electroplating hallmarks and feature turned or folded silver seams along structural joints.

Silver candlesticks can be arranged as a dining table centrepiece or placed symmetrically on a fireplace mantelpiece. Their Neoclassical form pairs well with both formal traditional settings and minimalist modern decor.

Clean using a soft cloth and a gentle, non-abrasive silver polish formulated for historic plated metalwork. Avoid aggressive scrubbing or harsh chemical dips, which can strip the thin layer of fused silver and expose the copper beneath.
