This George V sterling silver caddy spoon originates from England and dates to 1921. The piece combines a natural fluted shell bowl with a solid silver handle edged in a delicate beaded moulding, secured via three distinct metal prong mounts that grip the rim of the shell. The polished handle narrows gracefully toward the terminal end, displaying subtle metallic highlights against the luminous pearlescent white and cream tones of the organic shell component. The silver exhibits a clean, reflective finish while the shell shows natural growth ridges along its fan-like profile. Measuring 10.6 cm in length, this practical small serving implement suits display upon a sideboard top or within a glazed cabinet, functioning traditionally for portioning loose tea leaves from a caddy. Collectors of early twentieth-century silver tableware will find it a representative example of British craftsmanship from the period, perfectly suited for integration into formal dining settings or traditional tea service displays in contemporary interior schemes.

Tea caddy spoons emerged in late 18th-century Britain following the introduction of loose-leaf tea. Designed with a wide, short handle, they fit inside locked tea caddies and allowed the user to scoop accurate proportions of valuable tea leaves into a teapot.

Sterling silver was the standard material for caddy spoons due to its durability and resistance to corrosion. Artisans frequently integrated natural organic materials, such as shell, mother-of-pearl, tortoise shell, and bone, into the bowl or handle design.

Authentic English sterling silver pieces are stamped with hallmark symbols, including a lion passant to indicate silver purity, an assay office symbol (such as a leopard head for London or an anchor for Birmingham), a date letter code, and a makers mark.

Compact silver items can be displayed alongside antique tea service accessories on tray settings, arranged inside glass-topped collector cabinets, or placed on dining sideboards as decorative curiosities.

Wipe the natural shell section gently with a damp, soft cloth without submerging it in hot water or harsh chemicals. Polish the silver handle using a dedicated, non-abrasive silver cloth to maintain lustre and prevent tarnish buildup.
