Cutler’s  Stool (Industrial Folk Art Stool) in Elm and Ash, C1880

19th century
Description

A cutler’s stool in elm with ash legs. The design originated in the 19th century in the Sheffield based steel and cutlery making industry and is also known as a ‘buffer’s stool’ referring to use at the polishing wheel / buffing wheel in this 19th century industrial setting. They were almost always made with three legs to accommodate the uneven nature of the wooden factory floors and were often made ‘in house’ using offcuts from the main work benches. This particular stool has faceted ash legs, tenoned through the seat and a wonderful underseat chamfer - both signs of being early in the tradition. The 32mm thick elm seat (25mm at seat edge, due to the chamfer) has an interesting and attractive grain.

This nineteenth-century cutler’s stool is an industrial folk art piece from the 1800 period, following a rustic industrial style with a rustic farmhouse design vibe. The object combines a shaped elm seat with ash legs, presenting a warm brown colour and an original finish that highlights an interesting grain. Visible details include wedged tenon joinery on the top, faceted ash legs tenoned through the seat, and an underseat chamfer on the 32 mm thick elm seat, along with a three-legged tripod base. Measuring 34 cm high, 33 cm wide, and 31 cm deep, this practical small stool is suitable for placement by a fireplace hearth in a home today.

A cutlers stool is a specialised utilitarian seating piece traditionally used by knife-makers and metalworkers in industrial workshops during the nineteenth century.

These stools were commonly constructed from regional hardwoods such as elm for the seat due to its cross-grained resistance to splitting, and ash or oak for the sturdy turned legs.

Authentic pieces feature signs of manual hand-tooling, visible through-tenon or wedged-tenon joinery on the top of the seat, and natural wear patterns consistent with age and work environments.

A rustic stool functions as a versatile accent piece, serving as a plant stand, a low side table alongside contemporary seating, or a decorative display feature near a fireplace hearth.

Preserve the natural wood patina by keeping the stool away from direct heat sources and applying a high-quality beeswax polish once or twice a year.
