This Napoleon III opaline vase dates from 1870. The piece is formed from white opaline glass and finished with hand-painted gold filigree details, a slender neck, a pedestal foot, and a central black classical profile cameo medallion. The decoration includes elaborate gold starburst motifs surrounding the cameo, delicate gold dotted bands encircling the neck, and fine scalloped garlands draped along the bulbous body. The vase rests upon a circular turned pedestal base with a gilt-rimmed edge and shows light wear to the gilt finish around the flared top rim. The object measures 34.5 cm in height. Placed within a home today, this French Chateau style vessel serves as a striking decorative accent on a mantelpiece or display table, bringing classical nineteenth-century French elegance to an interior setting.

Napoleon III style opaline glass refers to decorative glassware produced in France during the Second French Empire (18521870). Characterised by its milky, translucent, or opaque appearance, this glass was frequently decorated with intricate gilding, enamelwork, or classical relief motifs.

Opaline glass was crafted by adding opacifiers such as tin oxide, bone ash, or cryolite to molten glass batch mixtures. Surface decorations typically utilised liquid gold leaf, fired enamel paints, and applied glass or resin cameos.

Authentic pieces feature smooth, blown-glass contours, polished or snapped pontil marks at the base, and hand-applied gilding that displays natural micro-wear. True opaline also exhibits distinct translucency when held to light, showing warm reddish or orange undertones.

Opaline glass functions as a refined accent piece when displayed on a fireplace mantelpiece, console table, or within a glass display cabinet. Placing the vase against neutral or dark backdrop walls allows the white glass and gold detailing to stand out.

Dust gently using a dry, soft microfibre cloth. Avoid soaking the piece in water, using abrasive sponges, or applying chemical detergents, as these methods can permanently strip hand-painted gilding and dissolve delicate adhesives on applied cameos.
