This Victorian silver nurse's buckle displays a two-piece interlocking design made from sterling silver with a reflective silver finish. The piece shows elaborate openwork pierced scroll patterns paired with detailed engraved foliate motifs across both symmetrical halves. It weighs approximately 25g and bears clear hallmarks for London, 1897, alongside faint surface marks resulting from age and gentle cleaning. The design features a secure central clasp mechanism that connects the two opposing ornate sections. The item measures 10 cm long and 4 cm wide according to the stated measurements. Collectors can display this piece as a decorative textile accessory or incorporate it into historical costume collections and period-appropriate wardrobe ensembles today.

Traditionally awarded upon graduation or completion of medical training, nurses buckles were functional decorative silver clasps worn on uniform belts during the late 19th and early 20th centuries.

Most authentic examples were crafted from sterling silver or silver plate, featuring intricate die-stamped, cast, or hand-pierced scrollwork with a central two-part interlocking mechanism.

Look for official British hallmarks indicating the silver purity mark, makers initials, assay office location, and date letter stamped onto the reverse of both interlocking sections.

These pieces can be worn on custom cloth belts or fabric sashes, displayed in glass shadow boxes, or repurposed into bespoke jewellery pieces such as pendants or wrist cuffs.

Clean gently using a soft lint-free cloth and non-abrasive silver polish, taking care to avoid harsh chemical dips that could strip natural surface patination or obscure hallmark details.
