This nineteenth-century French miniature scent bottle takes a barrel shape and dates circa 1880. The body consists of rich purple amethyst glass, sliced-cut in diamond and concentric patterns, accompanied by a hinged silver lid, an engraved silver collar, and small French guarantee boar head marks. The overall construction measures 3 cm in height, 3 cm in width, and 2 cm in depth. Placed upon a bedside table in a home today, the bottle serves as a decorative display piece. The dark purple glass contrasts with the reflective silver cap on top and the textured bands around the neck, while the multifaceted ends catch the light from multiple angles.

During the 19th century, French scent bottles, or flacons, were crafted as portable vessels for liquid perfume or smelling salts, frequently featuring silver mounts and cut coloured glass.

These vessels were typically constructed from hand-cut coloured glass or crystal, fitted with sterling or French hallmarked silver collars, caps, and ground glass stoppers.

Authentic examples feature French hallmark stamps on the metal collar or cap, precise hand-cut facets on the glass body, and age-appropriate wear along the base and internal rim.

Display smaller glass vessels on a mirrored vanity tray, inside a glass cloche, or alongside framed artwork on a bathroom shelf or bedside table for a refined accent.

Dust gently with a soft microfibre cloth, polish the silver mount carefully using a specialised silver cloth, and avoid immersing the vessel in water to protect internal fittings.
