Strictly Vetted Dealers

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.

Secure Transit

Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.

The Sustainable Choice

Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

This Victorian mahogany bookcase takes the form of a tall, slim cabinet with rounded corners, finished in a warm brown timber. The upper section comprises a cross-banded cornice with ogee moulding above two glazed doors with applied thumb mouldings, enclosing two mahogany-faced adjustable shelves. Below, two conforming panelled doors open to reveal further shelving, while the entire structure rests on a cross-grain and thumb-moulded offset plinth base. Both upper and lower sections are fitted with working brass locks and keys. Practical for everyday domestic storage, this two-piece cabinet suits a study, library or living room. Measuring 119 cm high, 109 cm wide and 47 cm deep, the unit offers generous vertical capacity while maintaining a compact footprint. The design includes visible wood grain variations across the mahogany panels, distinct keyhole escutcheons on the doors, and smooth curved glass panes set into the upper frames. Transporting as two separate pieces, the bookcase provides traditional display space above concealed lower storage, making it well-suited for organising books or glassware in a modern home interior.

FAQs

Victorian glazed bookcases typically feature dense timber construction, polished mahogany or oak finishes, moulded cornices, and upper display sections with glass panels set above solid lower cupboard doors.

Cabinetmakers used solid timber frameworks often veneered with flame mahogany or walnut, featuring hand-cut dovetail joints, brass keyhole escutcheons, and adjustable timber shelving supported by internal wooden pegs or notched brackets.

Authentic Victorian pieces display signs of hand-planed secondary timbers, hand-cut dovetail joinery on drawers or interior fittings, period-correct brass locks, and subtle imperfections or wavy distortions in original cylinder glass panes.

Position the cabinet against a neutral wall to highlight the warm wood grain, using the glazed upper shelves to display curated ceramics, glassware, or hardback books alongside minimalist decorative accents.

Keep the wood away from direct sunlight and heat sources to prevent cracking or fading, dust regularly with a dry soft cloth, and apply a natural beeswax polish twice a year to preserve the patina.
