This Victorian French display cabinet and writing desk dates from 1850 in the Louis XV Revival style. It combines warm brown kingwood and walnut timbers with glazed doors, a green tooled leather writing surface, and extensive foliate gilded brass ormolu mounts, rococo escutcheons, sabots, and a pierced top brass gallery. The upper bookcase section contains twin shelves behind shaped glass fronts, positioned above a desk base fitted with a long central drawer flanked by four smaller drawers, all finished with radial inlaid walnut and kingwood crossbanding and supported on cabriole legs. Practical dimensions are 150 cm high, 88 cm wide, and 50 cm deep. This piece serves as a combined writing desk and display cabinet in a home study, library, or drawing room, providing a dedicated writing surface alongside upper shelving for books or decorative objects.

A bonheur du jour is a type of ladies writing desk that originated in France during the eighteenth century. It typically features a flat writing surface surmounted by a raised cabinet section containing drawers or glazed doors.

French revival furniture of this period incorporates hardwoods such as kingwood and walnut arranged in veneer patterns. These pieces are trimmed with cast gilt-bronze (ormolu) mounts, brass galleries, and glass panels.

Authentic nineteenth-century French revival pieces feature hand-cut dovetail joints, cast metal mounts secured with slotted screws, and matching wood veneers. Age-appropriate patination appears on metal fittings alongside natural wear along drawer runners.

Position the desk against a neutral backdrop to highlight the timber veneers and metalwork. Pair it with minimalist seating or plain upholstery to balance traditional detailing with modern surroundings.

Dust wood veneers regularly with a dry microfibre cloth and apply natural beeswax sparingly along the grain. Avoid abrasive chemical cleaners on ormolu mounts, dusting them gently to preserve the surface patination.
