Strictly Vetted Dealers

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.

Secure Transit

Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.

The Sustainable Choice

Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

A George V sterling silver and tortoiseshell trinket box of circular form stands on three decorated cabriole legs. The hinged lid incorporates a shaped pie crust border with a scalloped silver rim enclosing a polished dark brown tortoiseshell insert, while the plain silver body rests above the floor on delicate feet. Hallmarks appear on the metal components, showing softening alongside minor age-related wear, and the interior contains a lining of velvet and silk. Measuring 4.5 cm high, 7.5 cm wide, and 7.5 cm deep, the vessel suits placement on a bedside table to store small personal items such as cufflinks and rings. It functions as a decorative accessory within an English Country House interior setting.

FAQs

Produced during the early 20th century, these boxes combine hallmarked sterling silver mounts with inlaid tortoiseshell lids. They were crafted primarily as vanity accessories for dressing tables during the George V period.

These items typically feature solid sterling silver bases and rims paired with polished natural tortoiseshell lids. The metal components are constructed using silver smithing techniques, often supported on small cast silver legs.

Authentic British pieces feature official silver hallmarks indicating the assay office, silver purity standard, makers mark, and date letter corresponding to the reign of King George V. The tortoiseshell displays organic mottled patterns rather than uniform synthetic mould lines.

Position the box on a bedroom bedside table, vanity tray, or bathroom counter to store small jewellery items. It also functions as a structured decorative accent atop a stack of books on a sideboard or desk.

Gently polish the silver frame with a soft microfiber cloth and specialized silver cream, avoiding contact with the tortoiseshell inlay. Keep the tortoiseshell away from direct heat sources and dry environments, wiping it lightly with mineral oil to preserve hydration.
