This pair of French Empire candlesticks dates from the nineteenth century and exemplifies the refined style associated with the period. Cast from ormolu gilt bronze, the objects possess a rich gold colour with a bright polished finish that catches the light across the decorative surfaces. The design incorporates engine-turned cylindrical shafts adorned with stylised classical scales, accompanied by bands of floral palmettes and acanthus leaf relief. Each candlestick stands upon a stepped circular base featuring detailed chased borders and floral motifs. The upper nozzle sections mirror the textured patterning of the columns below, completing the symmetrical composition. Each candlestick measures 27.5 cm high and 13 cm wide. These pieces suit placement upon a mantelpiece or a formal dining table, adding a touch of classical French chateau character to a traditional interior setting.

Produced during the reign of Napoleon Bonaparte in the early nineteenth century, French Empire candlesticks are characterised by classical Roman and Egyptian architectural influences, symmetrical proportions, and detailed metalwork executed in fire-gilded bronze.

These pieces are typically cast in bronze and finished using mercury gilding, also known as ormolu, which creates a durable, high-lustre gold surface over intricate hand-chased relief patterns.

Genuine period pieces feature heavy cast bronze construction, fine hand-chasing on decorative motifs, threaded multi-part sectional assembly, and subtle wear on touchpoints revealing the underlying metal.

Position a matching pair symmetrically on a dark marble mantelpiece, a dining table centrepiece, or a wooden sideboard to establish visual structure and contrast against modern minimalist backdrops.

Dust gently using a soft, dry camel-hair brush or microfibre cloth, avoiding harsh chemical cleaners, metal polishes, or water that can strip or degrade the delicate gilded surface.
