This Art Deco napkin ring originates from 1930, bearing hallmarks for Birmingham and the maker Joseph Cook and Son. Fashioned from solid sterling silver, the piece possesses a polished metallic finish and weighs 24 grams. The rectangular band displays a central oval faceted citrine gemstone in a claw setting, surrounded by radial sunburst engraving and subtle surface wear consistent with age. Additional details visible include a smooth inner surface, curved edges, and a small maker mark near the rim. The ring measures 6 cm across by 2.7 cm wide by 2.1 cm tall. Placed upon a dining table center, it functions as a decorative tableware accessory to hold cloth napkins during formal meals or everyday dining.

Napkin rings became widespread during the nineteenth century as a practical method for identifying family members cloth linens between laundering cycles. During the Art Deco era of the 1930s, silversmiths frequently incorporated semi-precious gemstones such as citrine, quartz, or agate into silver table appointments to reflect contemporary jewelry trends.

Pieces from this era were primarily fabricated from sterling silver, formed via sheet bending, casting, or engine turning. Decorative elements included hand-engraved geometric details and bezel or claw-set stones mounted directly onto the exterior metal surface.

Authentic silver items bear official assay hallmarks indicating purity, makers initials, and date letter codes stamped into the metal. Structural signs include characteristic geometric silhouettes, sunburst engraving, and era-appropriate stone setting techniques.

Pair antique silver napkin rings with modern linen napkins in neutral shades like cream, charcoal, or taupe to highlight the metallic contrast. Combining vintage silver table appointments with contemporary ceramics creates a balanced, layered table landscape.

Clean the silver using a soft, non-abrasive cloth and mild silver polish, taking care to avoid harsh chemicals near the gemstone. Avoid fully submerging gem-set silver pieces in water, as moisture can become trapped behind the setting and loosen the mount over time.
