Strictly Vetted Dealers

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.

Secure Transit

Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.

The Sustainable Choice

Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

This set of four French Rococo wall lights dates from the early 20th century, bringing a classical French Chateau style to interior spaces. Each piece takes the form of twin-arm sconces mounted to C-scroll backplates, decorated with ornate acanthus leaf scrolls, leaf-clad scrolling branches, and leaf bobeche drip pans holding tall candle-style bulbs with visible filaments. The metal surfaces display a warm gold colour with original faded gilded patination, showing subtle texture and tonal variation across the brass and gilt bronze construction. Each individual light measures 35 cm high, 28 cm wide, and 10 cm deep. These sconces suit domestic placement in a fireplace alcove, flanking a mirror, or providing ambient hallway illumination.

FAQs

French Rococo wall sconces, often referred to as appliques, originated in the early eighteenth century during the reign of Louis XV. Characterised by asymmetrical curves, foliate motifs, and C-scrolls, these fixtures were designed to reflect candlelight across grand reception rooms.

Authentic French wall appliques were primarily cast in bronze or brass and finished using mercury gilding, known as ormolu, or gold leaf applications to produce a durable gilded exterior.

Authentic antique sconces typically feature hand-chased bronze detailing, visible casting seams on the reverse, heavy overall weight, and subtle surface wear or oxidisation in the gilding consistent with age.

Gilt wall lights can be mounted against matte, modern wall finishes or dark paint tones to create visual contrast, or positioned to flank artwork, mirrors, and architectural features.

Maintain gilded finishes by dusting regularly with a soft, dry camel-hair brush or microfibre cloth, avoiding water, harsh chemical cleaners, or abrasive polishes that can wear away gilding.
