This Edwardian ceramic art cabinet plate exhibits a circular porcelain body with a hand-painted still life motif depicting grapes, peaches, and a single raspberry against an earthy background. The rim incorporates a gilded scalloped profile finished in warm gold, complemented by visible artist signature details and polychrome enamel tones in rich reds, yellows, and greens. Measuring 22.5 cm high, 22.5 cm wide, and 2 cm deep, the dessert-sized dish exemplifies mid-1930s porcelain design. Placement in a contemporary interior suits display above a sideboard in a dining room or living space, positioned on a plate stand or mounted within an architectural display cabinet. The piece functions effectively as a decorative accent that brings English country house character to traditional or transitional room schemes, integrating smoothly into existing tablescape displays or curated collections of fine English ceramics.

FAQs

Cabinet plates are ornamental porcelain pieces created primarily for display rather than functional dining, highlighting detailed hand-painted artistry. Royal Worcester gained international renown in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries for its signature fruit compositions, produced by highly skilled porcelain artists.

These pieces were crafted using fine bone china or soft-paste porcelain fired at elevated temperatures to establish a smooth glaze. Master decorators then painted detailed fruit still life subjects by hand using mineral-based enamels, finishing the outer rim with hand-burnished gold leaf.

Authentic examples feature factory backstamps printed on the underside, often accompanied by artist signatures concealed within the painting. True hand-painted pieces exhibit subtle variations in brushwork and enamel depth under magnification, unlike flat uniform transfer prints.

Display cabinet plates upright on wooden easel stands atop sideboards or mantelpieces, or secure them inside glazed display cabinets. Alternatively, arrange a curated set on a dining room wall using plate hangers to form an artistic focal point.

Dust gently using a dry microfibre cloth or wash carefully by hand in warm water with a gentle detergent. Avoid abrasive sponges, harsh chemical cleansers, or dishwashers, as these will wear down delicate surface paint and burnished gold trim over time.
