Large 63g 800 Solid Silver Boy Pepper Pot C1900 Antique Novelty Cruet

1900 - 1920
Description

A superb German 800 solid silver pepper pot. It is hallmarked with German state marks along with the 800 silver standard mark. It dates to c1900-1910. It has been superbly designed being in the form of a traditional boy. It is in superb condition being free from dings, splits, holes and repairs. Note the head placed on facing forward wobbles but doesn't when twisted to the side - either way it is secure. (I think he was intended to face sideways at a matching girl pepper?) It measures approx. 4 inches (10cm) tall by 2.5 inches wide and weighs 63 grams. A quality piece.

This German 800 solid silver pepper pot dates to 1900. Modelled as a standing boy in a cap, neckscarf, and wide trousers with his hands resting on his hips, the figural piece exhibits chased details and a reflective silver finish. The standing figure wears rounded shoes and possesses a head that wobbles when facing forward yet remains secure when turned to the side. It measures 10 cm tall by 6 cm wide and weighs 63 grams. The antique novelty cruet sits on a sideboard top in an English country house setting. The small decorative item brings character to a dining room display or functions as a conversational table accessory during meals. Regular placement on a flat surface keeps the solid silver object secure while maintaining its traditional Continental silver design.

FAQs

Novelty silver cruets and pepper pots became popular during the late 19th and early 20th centuries, transforming standard dining accessories into sculptural figurines depicting people, animals, and everyday objects.

These items were typically cast or hollow-formed from sterling or continental silver, such as 800 purity silver, featuring hand-chased surface details and small pierced openings at the top to allow ground pepper to dispense.

Authentic period pieces display period hallmarks or silver purity stamps, possess appropriate weight characteristic of cast metal, and exhibit refined hand-chasing marks rather than uniform modern machine moulding.

A silver novelty figurine can be placed as a decorative accent on a dining room sideboard, inside a glass display cabinet, or incorporated into a formal table arrangement.

Clean silver gently using a soft cotton cloth and a specialized silver polish, avoiding abrasive pads or harsh chemical dips that could strip aged patina or damage surface chasing.
