Pair of Antique "Arts and Crafts" Pewter Candlesticks

1900 - 1920
For Sale by Antiques4EU
Description

A most attractive Pair of Early 20th Century Antique Pewter Candlesticks of transitional design, but likely to be considered by most collectors as being in the Arts and Crafts manner, rather than Art Nouveau. Whilst they appear to be unmarked, we have refrained from removing the inset bases which may of course be obscuring a Maker's Mark, although the overall design would suggest a Scandinavian provenance. Minor dent to rim of one candlestick, which, whilst in no way detracting from the beauty of the pair, may nevertheless be examined and considered via the illustrations.

Height ~ 19.50 cm. / 7.68 inches ~ Width ~ 12.50 cm. / 4.92 inches ~ Depth ~ 12.50 cm. / 4.92 inches ~ Year ~ Circa 1910.

Why Sellingantiques dated this piece to THE 1910s:
Planished hammer marks on the stems: hand-finishing typical of the Arts and Crafts period.
Stylised relief motifs around the bases: transitional Art Nouveau and Arts and Crafts styling.
Soft grey oxidisation across the metal: natural ageing of early pewter.
Dry, wrinkled base linings: original protective coverings from the early 20th century.

This is an independent date report produced by Sellingantiques using its own proprietary system. The process uses the photographs shown on this page. The system is never told the date the dealer has declared. This report shows that the two dates corroborate.

Strictly Vetted Dealers

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.

Secure Transit

Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.

The Sustainable Choice

Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

This pair of early 20th century candlesticks exemplifies the Arts and Crafts style, rendered in pewter with a pewter grey colour. The pieces display a hand-hammered planished texture across the tapered stems, contrasting with smooth, wide flared circular bases decorated with small stamped motifs around the perimeter. Each candlestick includes a moulded socket at the top and a defined collar above the base, presenting a traditional form associated with the period. The candlesticks stand 20 cm high, 13 cm wide, and 13 cm deep. In a contemporary home, these items suit display upon a mantelpiece, a side table, or a dining surface within an English Country House interior. The metal surfaces show subtle variations in tone reflecting the vintage craftsmanship and age. The construction incorporates inset bases and clean vertical lines that highlight the utilitarian aesthetic typical of early 1910 metalwork. They integrate readily into traditional or transitional decorative schemes without requiring extensive staging or specialised placement.

FAQs

Originating in the late 19th century, Arts and Crafts pewter design emphasised hand-craftsmanship, visible joinery, and textured surfaces as a reaction against mass industrial production. Designs often feature planished or hand-hammered metalwork with stylized botanical or geometric details.

Pewter candlesticks were cast or seam-rolled using an alloy primarily composed of tin, modified with copper or antimony for strength. The characteristic dimpled texture was applied manually using shaping hammers to highlight the makers technique.

Authentic pieces frequently display maker marks, touchmarks, or model numbers stamped on the base alongside visible hand-hammered planishing marks. The metal features a dull grey patina rather than a modern high-gloss finish, accompanied by minor variations from manual casting.

Pewter candlesticks create tonal contrast when arranged on light oak dining tables, dark timber mantels, or stone sideboards. Pairing them with simple white taper candles provides a minimalist focal point that bridges historic metalwork with modern decor.

Pewter should be washed gently using warm water, mild detergent, and a non-abrasive soft cloth to safeguard the natural surface patina. Chemical cleaners, silver polishes, and harsh abrasives should be avoided as they remove natural oxidisation and detail.
