FAQs

Arts and Crafts lighting from the late 19th and early 20th centuries prioritised handcrafted integrity, visible structural elements, and stylized natural forms over mass production. Fixtures often combined shaped metals such as brass or copper with decorative glass shades reflecting organic motifs.

Lighting from the Edwardian period typically utilised cast or spun brass, wrought copper, and hand-blown glass shades. Shades were frequently made from frosted, etched, or coloured glass, such as cranberry or opalescent varieties, often featuring painted enamel decoration.

Authentic period brass lighting exhibits natural surface tarnish or patination in unpolished areas, hand-assembled joints, screw-thread variations consistent with early manufacturing, and period-appropriate wear around mounting points and shade holders.

A period brass chandelier serves as a focal point when suspended above a dining room table, within a central hallway, or over a kitchen island. Combining historic lighting with contemporary decor creates an engaging contrast while highlighting the craftsmanship of the fixture.

Clean the brass structure gently using a soft, dry lint-free cloth to preserve the original patina, avoiding harsh abrasive chemicals. Wash the glass shades separately in warm water with mild detergent, avoiding vigorous scrubbing on hand-painted enamel areas.
