Antique Japanese Imari Porcelain Charger Plate Hand Painted Floral Bird Design Decorative Dish

1900 - 1920
Description

An antique Japanese Imari porcelain charger of excellent decorative quality, richly hand painted in the traditional palette of iron red, cobalt blue and gilt. The square shaped form with softly scalloped edge is beautifully detailed with panels of stylised foliage, landscape scenes and reserves, centred by a striking floral arrangement issuing from a vase with a perched bird above. The border is further enhanced with bold cartouches and gilt highlights, giving the piece a strong visual impact.

Imari ware was produced for both the domestic Japanese market and export, particularly to Europe, where such chargers were highly prized for display on cabinets, walls or dining room sideboards. Pieces like this were often used as statement decorative objects rather than for everyday dining, reflecting status and taste.

Strictly Vetted Dealers

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.

Secure Transit

Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.

The Sustainable Choice

Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

This antique Japanese Imari porcelain charger from 1900 is finished with a glossy white glaze and decorated with hand-painted iron red, cobalt blue, and gilt enamels. The square dish features a softly scalloped rim, a central bonsai planter design with floral arrangements, detailed corner reserves, and patterned diaper border designs. The porcelain plate measures 4.5 cm high, 29.5 cm wide, and 29.5 cm deep. Such decorative dishes suit traditional and English Country House interiors as display pieces. Placed flat on a sideboard top or mounted on a wall in a dining room, living room, or hallway, the charger serves as a striking standalone ornamental dish or coordinates with other porcelain displays.

FAQs

Imari porcelain refers to Japanese export ceramics produced in the Arita area of Hizen province and shipped via the port of Imari, traditionally characterised by underglaze cobalt blue and overglaze iron red and gold decoration.

It is crafted from fine kaolin clay porcelain, high-fired with underglaze cobalt blue, then hand-painted with overglaze iron-red enamels and gold gilding before receiving a lower-temperature secondary firing.

Authentic pieces feature asymmetrical hand-painted detailing, subtle surface irregularities, spur marks on the base, and characteristic underglaze blue combined with rich iron-red enamel and gold accents.

These decorative plates can be displayed upright on brass plate stands atop sideboards, arranged in a curated wall grouping above a console table, or placed as a central focal point on a coffee table.

Clean gently using lukewarm water and a soft cloth with mild detergent, avoiding chemical solvents, abrasive pads, or dishwashers to protect the delicate overglaze enamels and gilding.
