This large-scale antique Ushak carpet originates from the Anatolian region and dates from 1920. Constructed from hand-knotted wool, the piece presents an intricate scheme of central geometric medallions, star palmettes, stepped geometric borders, and angular scrollwork. The textile displays a palette of soft blue, terracotta, pale blue, muted pinks, and soft saffron yellow tones, showing mellowed dyes that indicate age across the entire surface. The field incorporates repeated lozenge-shaped motifs alongside smaller multi-coloured floral devices, bordered by elaborate bands of repeating geometric and floral patterns in alternating shades of beige, blue, and yellow. Measuring 525 cm high by 415 cm wide, the large rug provides substantial floor coverage for principal reception spaces, drawing rooms, or central hallways within traditional and English Country House interiors. The carpet rests flat upon the floor, functioning well as a decorative foundation beneath central seating arrangements or dining layouts, bringing warmth and established pattern to large living environments.

Ushak (or Oushak) carpets originate from the town of Usak in West-Central Anatolia, Turkey, which has been a major centre for carpet weaving since the 15th century. These carpets are recognised for their soft pastel colour palettes, silky wool texture, and large-scale geometric or medallion motifs.

Traditional Ushak carpets are hand-knotted using spun wool on a wool or cotton warp and weft foundation. They employ the symmetrical Turkish (Ghiordes) knot, which provides structural integrity and creates the characteristic soft pile.

Authentic antique Ushak carpets feature a muted palette derived from natural vegetable dyes, frequently including pale blues, terracottas, and creams. They are characterised by a lower knot density, large geometric medallions, and subtle colour variations known as abrash.

An Ushak rug serves as a foundational element in a room, pairing effectively with both contemporary neutral upholstery and dark timber furniture. Its soft, muted tones complement clean lines and understated interior schemes without visual conflict.

Vacuum regularly using a suction-only setting without a rotating brush to prevent fibre distortion. Spills should be blotted immediately with an absorbent cloth, and professional cleaning by a specialist textile conservator is recommended periodically.
