Victorian novelty pencil pendants were functional writing instruments crafted in miniature shapes such as crosses, animals, or books, often worn on a chatelaine or necklace chain.

These items were typically constructed from sterling silver, sometimes with gold accents, featuring sliding or twist-action mechanisms to extend and retract the graphite lead.

Authenticity is usually verified through makers marks, such as the SM stamp associated with Sampson Morden, alongside British silver hallmarks indicating the assay office and year.

Such pieces can be suspended from a simple modern chain to serve as a focal point, pairing historical craftsmanship with contemporary minimalist attire.

Antique silver should be cleaned sparingly using a soft microfibre cloth and specialized silver polish, avoiding harsh chemical dips that can damage delicate mechanisms or remove desirable oxidisation.
