Strictly Vetted Dealers

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.

Secure Transit

Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.

The Sustainable Choice

Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

This vintage nautical storage box dates from the 1930 period and serves as a functional chest trunk. The piece exhibits a vibrant blue painted timber finish complemented by raised side handles, stepped mouldings, and a hinged lid. The lid bears a hand-painted gold laurel wreath border enclosing lettering that reads The Yacht Britannia Cowes I.O.W. 1902. The front panel features a hand-painted yachting scene of sailing vessels on the water, framed by an oval rope border. Measuring 55 cm in width, 36.5 cm in depth, and 34 cm in height, the chest provides practical storage capacity. Such an item suits placement on a sideboard top in a coastal retreat interior, offering enclosed organisation for smaller items while adding a maritime decorative element to the room.

FAQs

Nautical painted storage boxes originated as functional trunks used by sailors and yachting enthusiasts to store tools, personal effects, or logbooks onboard ships. Over time, commemorative items featuring painted sea vessels, yacht names, and regatta dates became popular decorative items for coastal residences.

These trunks were typically constructed from durable softwoods or hardwoods such as pine, oak, or mahogany, joined with dovetail or butt joints. The exterior surfaces were primed, painted, and varnished, often incorporating rope-work borders or metal hardware to withstand marine environments.

Authentic pieces exhibit signs of natural age, such as fine craquelure in the paint, surface patination, and minor wear around corners and handles. Original hand-painted details display brush strokes and slight irregularities, unlike modern printed reproductions.

A painted nautical chest serves as a distinctive accent piece on a sideboard, coffee table, or deep window sill in coastal, eclectic, or traditional interiors. It pairs well with neutral textiles, natural timber tones, and brass decorative accessories.

To preserve the painted finish, dust the surface regularly with a soft, dry microfibre cloth and keep the item away from direct sunlight and heat sources. Avoid chemical solvents or abrasive cleaners, applying a light coat of clear beeswax sparingly if required for protection.
