The Sustainable Choice

Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

FAQs

Guilloche enamel is a decorative technique where a precise geometric pattern is mechanically engraved into a metal surface beneath a translucent layer of enamel. It gained widespread popularity during the late 19th and early 20th centuries, particularly during the Edwardian and Art Deco periods.

These items are typically crafted from sterling or fine silver, often featuring hand-applied vitreous glass enamel over machine-turned metal bases. Interiors may sometimes be lined with velvet, silk, or left as polished bare metal.

Authenticity is usually verified through metal hallmarks stamped on the base or rim, indicating the purity of the silver and the makers mark. Genuine antique vitreous enamel exhibits a glass-like feel, subtle surface undulations, and natural signs of age rather than the uniform plastic finish of modern resin replicas.

Such decorative pieces work effectively when placed on dressing tables, mantelpieces, or side tables as standalone accents or paired with other small curiosities. Their reflective surfaces and delicate colours add subtle texture and metallic sheen to surface displays.

Enamel should be cleaned gently using a soft, dry or slightly damp microfiber cloth to remove dust. Avoid harsh chemical polishes, ultrasonic cleaners, and abrasive cloths, as these can permanently scratch the delicate glass surface and strip the surrounding silver.
