Originating in the 18th and 19th centuries, silver-topped vanity jars were designed for hold cosmetic powders, creams, ointments, or small items of jewellery on a bedroom dressing table or vanity unit.

These items typically pair a heavy cut or pressed lead glass base with a sterling or silver-plated lid, which was often hand-chased, engine-turned, or embossed with ornate patterns.

Authentic British silver items feature official assay office hallmarks, including a makers mark, silver purity mark (such as the lion passant for sterling silver), town mark, and date letter stamped directly onto the metal lid.

They are commonly styled on a bedroom vanity table, a bathroom shelf, or a bedside table to display small items, act as ring dishes, or add texture alongside framed photographs and candles.

Clean the glass base with warm water and mild liquid soap, avoiding immersion if silver components are attached. Polish the silver lid gently using a silver polishing cloth, avoiding abrasive cleaners that could wear down the embossed details or thin silver layers.
