Georgian sugar baskets became prominent during the 18th century as tea drinking grew in popularity among the affluent classes, necessitating specialised vessels to hold sugar lumps or loaves for the table.

These items were typically crafted from sterling silver using techniques such as piercing, casting, and repousse work, frequently paired with blown cobalt blue glass liners to protect the metal and enhance the visual contrast.

Authentic pieces are identified through clear hallmarks indicating the makers mark, town mark, standard mark (such as the lion passant for sterling), and a duty mark where applicable, alongside period-appropriate craftsmanship and patination.

These vessels can be displayed on a sideboard, dining table, or open shelving as decorative accents, using their rich metallic shine and coloured glass to introduce a sophisticated historic element to contemporary spaces.

Sterling silver should be cleaned periodically with a specialised, non-abrasive silver polish to remove tarnish, while glass liners should be washed by hand in warm soapy water to avoid thermal shock.
