Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.

Secure Transit

FAQs

Imari porcelain is a style of Japanese export porcelain produced in the town of Arita, in the former Hizen Province, and shipped from the port of Imari. It gained prominence during the Edo period, particularly in the late 17th and 18th centuries, for the European export market.

Traditional Imari pieces are crafted from high-fired white porcelain clay and are characterised by a distinctive palette consisting of underglaze cobalt blue, overglaze iron red, and enriched with gold detailing over a white background.

Authentic pieces typically exhibit hand-painted motifs, slight imperfections consistent with historical firing techniques, fine crazing in the glaze, and sometimes unglazed foot rims showing the texture of the porcelain body. Marks on the base can also offer clues to the period, though many export pieces were unmarked or bore imitation Chinese reign marks.

An Imari plate can be mounted on a wall as decorative art, displayed on a specialised stand within a cabinet, or placed flat on a sideboard to introduce rich colour, pattern, and historical contrast to a contemporary or traditional scheme.

Antique porcelain should be washed by hand using lukewarm water and a mild detergent when necessary, avoiding abrasive sponges or harsh chemicals. Due to the fragility of overglaze enamels and gilding, pieces should never be placed in a dishwasher or microwave.
