Originating in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, Arts and Crafts silverwork rejected mass industrial production in favour of handcrafted, artisan techniques. Wine tasters, traditionally known as tastevins, were adopted by silversmiths as small decorative and functional vessels showcasing hand-hammered textures.

Items from this movement were typically wrought from sterling silver, characterised by planished or hand-hammered surfaces that retain visible tool marks. Decorative elements often incorporated semi-precious cabochon stones, enamel plaques, or hand-cut pierced strapwork motifs.

Authentic pieces generally bear British silver hallmarks indicating the assay office, purity standard, date letter, and makers mark. Look for distinctive planished hand-hammered finishing, organic structural forms, and hand-cut pierced decoration characteristic of prominent period workshops.

Small decorative silver vessels serve as elegant accent pieces when displayed on coffee tables, sideboards, or desk trays. They function exceptionally well as ring dishes, coin trays, or curated display items within modern minimalist or classic settings.

Clean silver surfaces gently with a soft microfibre cloth and a specialised silver polish, avoiding harsh abrasive cleaners. Extra caution must be taken around mounted semi-precious stones or cabochons, preventing liquid polish from seeping behind setting mounts.
