Rectangular Victorian Walnut Salon Stool

19th century
Description

A Very Good Quality Mid 19th Century, Victorian Period, Rectangular Walnut Salon Stool Having Attractive Serpentine Shaped Deep Buttoned Old Damask Covered Seat, Over Moulded Frame With Good Carved Decoration, Raised On Four Elegant And Bold Cabriole Legs Terminating With Foliate Carved Decoration And Tall Turned Feet.

A relatively typical in terms of overall design mid 19th century large stool, that stands above many in terms of the quality and elegance of its features and constuction. It has been constructed using particularly good quality, dense walnut timbers which have allowed for an excellent quality of carving and shaping.

The upholstery featured on top is a form of Damask, and in relatively good condition considering how old it probably is. We don’t believe it to be original, but certainly it is in the original style and has been in place for a very long while. There are of course some old minor stains and marks but nothing that reallu takes the eye and it is generally clean and in good condition overall as can be seen from the photos.

Perfect for a host of spaces around the home, this stool is also something which could be used for a whole host of different purposes aside from just the original obvious intention as a stool. Many people would consider purchasing a tray to place on top and then using a stool of this design and proportions as a coffee type table.

Overall it is in really good sound condition and ready for immediate placement within the home having been inspected at our workshops by our trained antique furniture restorer and received a natural wax polish before being placed on sale.

This Victorian rectangular salon stool dates from the nineteenth century. The piece is constructed from dense walnut timbers displaying a warm brown finish, and features a button-tufted pink damask fabric top mounted on an over-moulded frame with a carved serpentine apron. The structure is supported by four cabriole legs decorated with foliate carving and terminating in tall turned feet. Measuring 49 cm in height by 107 cm in width and 58 cm in depth, the item provides versatile seating. In a contemporary home, the stool suits placement at the foot of the bed or serving as a low table when paired with a tray. The wood has received a natural wax polish following inspection and restoration in the workshops, ensuring the piece is ready for immediate domestic placement.

A Victorian salon stool is a low, cushioned seating piece introduced during the nineteenth century for formal drawing rooms and bedrooms. Influenced by French Rococo revival tastes, these pieces typically feature carved hardwood frames, serpentine aprons, and button-tufted upholstery.

Frames were typically crafted from solid hardwoods such as walnut, mahogany, or rosewood. Structural interiors utilised coil springs, horsehair padding, and burlap webbing, topped with plush woven fabrics like velvet, damask, or silk.

Authentic pieces exhibit hand-carved detailing along the cabriole legs and apron, corner-blocked joinery beneath the frame, and natural patination on exposed timber surfaces. Webbing and hand-driven upholstery tacks are often visible on the underside.

These versatile stools function well at the foot of a bed, as occasional seating in a dressing area, or situated within a living room set alongside contemporary upholstery to add historical balance.

Dust timber frames using a soft, dry cloth and nourish the wood periodically with natural beeswax polish. Fabric upholstery should be gently vacuumed using a soft brush attachment and kept away from direct sunlight to prevent colour fading.
