Hanging lanterns evolved from practical street and hallway lighting sources fueled by oil or candles into decorative architectural fixtures, becoming particularly ornate during the Victorian period with the introduction of gas and later electricity.

Authentic period lanterns are typically constructed from cast or pressed brass, copper, or iron frames fitted with mouth-blown or stained glass panels, joined using traditional soldering and mechanical fasteners.

Authenticity is determined by examining the patination of the metal, hand-cut glass variations, old screw types, and evidence of previous fuel conversion rather than modern mass-produced components.

Positioning an antique lantern in an entryway, hallway, or above a kitchen island creates a striking focal point that contrasts historical texture with contemporary minimalist surroundings.

Dust metal components gently with a dry microfiber cloth and avoid harsh chemical polishes that strip the historical patination, while cleaning glass panels carefully with a mild glass cleaner.
