Description

A beautiful and very well made antique Edwardian inlaid mahogany piano duet stool. This was made in England, it dates from the 1890-1910 period.

The quality is excellent this has a gorgeous and very useful design. Designed for duets at a piano, this is very useful as a storage bench for an entry way, window seat or even at the foot of a bed. There are beautiful satin wood inlay designs on all sides, the front and back are finished identically, so it can be used as a free standing item. The upholstered seat lifts up to reveal a useful storage compartment, this has spade feet and an H framed stretchered base for extra strength.

We have had this re-polished and the seat has been re-upholstered in a cream cotton fabric. The condition is excellent for its age, with just some minor wear beneath the polish here and there, commensurate for age.

Edwardian furniture, produced during the reign of King Edward VII from 1901 to 1910, is characterised by lighter, more airy designs that often drew inspiration from earlier 18th-century Sheraton and Hepplewhite styles, frequently featuring delicate satinwood stringing and mahogany construction.

These pieces were typically constructed from dense hardwoods such as mahogany or satinwood, often decorated with marquetry or string inlay, and upholstered with traditional fabrics like velvet, tapestry, or leather over horsehair padding.

Authentic pieces usually exhibit period-appropriate joinery such as dovetails or hand-cut screws, natural timber ageing beneath the finish, traditional upholstery techniques, and subtle hand-crafted inlay rather than modern printed veneers.

An antique piano stool functions effectively as an occasional seat in a living room, a dressing table bench in a bedroom, or a standalone decorative accent beneath a hallway console table to introduce historical texture.

Preservation involves keeping the timber away from direct sunlight and heat sources to prevent wood splitting, dusting regularly with a dry cloth, and occasionally applying a traditional beeswax polish to nourish the grain.
