Gilt bronze, also known as ormolu, gained immense popularity in France during the 18th and 19th centuries, particularly within the Louis XIV, Regency, and Empire styles, where artisans applied finely ground gold amalgam to bronze bases to create luxurious decorative objects.

These items are traditionally crafted using the lost-wax casting method for the bronze figures and foliage, followed by mercury gilding or electroplating to achieve a durable, lustrous golden finish, frequently combined with marble bases.

Authentic period pieces exhibit hand-chased details with crisp tool marks under magnification, natural wear patterns revealing the bronze beneath the gold layer, and heavy, solid construction rather than lightweight hollow metals.

They can be used as striking focal points on a mantelpiece, dining table centrepiece, or sideboard, contrasting against minimalist contemporary furnishings to add warmth, texture, and historical interest.

Maintenance requires dusting gently with a soft, dry microfibre cloth; harsh chemical cleaners, abrasives, and water must be strictly avoided to protect the delicate gold leaf or ormolu surface from irreversible damage.
