During the Victorian period, reading became a widespread leisure activity, leading to an increase in the production of decorative desk accessories and personal bookmarks crafted from metals like silver and brass.

Nineteenth-century bookmarks were typically manufactured from sterling silver, mother-of-pearl, ivory, brass, and occasionally fine textiles, often featuring stamped or engraved detailing.

Authentic pieces feature standard British hallmark stamps including a makers mark, a purity mark indicating sterling silver, a town mark, and a date letter corresponding to the specific assay year.

A vintage bookmark can be displayed resting on an open volume atop a coffee table, placed inside a glass-fronted bookcase, or styled as a decorative desk object.

Antique silver should be cleaned sparingly using a soft microfiber cloth and a mild silver polish designed to preserve the historical patina without damaging fine engravings or hallmarks.
