This Victorian bookmark takes the form of a miniature dagger, combining sterling silver and cream mother-of-pearl in a gentleman's library style. The silver blade displays clear hallmarks, an engraved border line, and shaped cutouts near the tip, accompanied by openwork scroll quillons and a spherical bolster at the hilt. The tapered haft consists of mother-of-pearl flanked by decorative silver terminals with engraved detailing. Measuring 10 cm high by 2.8 cm wide and 1 cm deep, this novelty piece rests practically and attractively upon an office desk to hold pages in a favourite volume during daily reading. The construction shows no dents or splits, maintaining a clean presentation suitable for use or display.

FAQs

During the Victorian era, silver bookmarks shaped like miniature swords or daggers became popular novelty desk accessories. Used to keep ones place in leather-bound volumes without damaging the paper, these items reflected nineteenth-century romanticism and interest in historical weaponry.

These bookmarks were commonly constructed using sterling silver or silver plate for the blade and guard, paired with organic materials such as carved mother-of-pearl, bone, or tortoiseshell for the handle grip.

Authentic Victorian examples feature official British hallmark stamps on the silver blade or guard, indicating the purity mark, assay office, date letter, and makers mark. Construction methods usually include hand-engraved detailing and traditional pin-mounted hafting for the handle.

Small decorative desk accessories of this nature can be displayed flat on a stack of art books, placed within a shallow glass vitrine, or presented on a leather desk tray alongside writing journals.

Clean the silver blade using a soft, non-abrasive polishing cloth to prevent tarnish accumulation, ensuring no liquid polish comes into direct contact with the mother-of-pearl handle, which can suffer chemical damage.
