Description

This is an exceptional and very collectible rug from the region of Karachov in the south-western Caucasus, dated 1275 which translates to 1854 - as early a Karachov as can be found these days.

The overall talismanic design is typically Karachov with its large octagonal, central lozenge, in this case on a red ground, and two, square symbols at each end, all containing nine '8-pointed stars'. Within the central, octagonal lozenge, are various small symbols on an ivory background, which is not something readily seen in later 19th century Karachovs. Note also, the 'zigzag' lines on either side of the red ground, one longer than the other and below each line, are 'fives' or 'quincunx' - symbols of protection.

Lastly but hugely important, is the rare and early main border on an ivory background, which I see as double-headed sunbirds, symbolic guardians of the gates of Paradise.

This is a highly important rug which is smaller in size to the later 19th century Karachovs, and in very good overall condition.

Size: 1.86m x 1.40m (6' 1" x 4' 7").

We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.

Karachov rugs originate from the mountainous regions of the southern Caucasus and are characterised by bold, large-scale geometric central medallions, rectilinear motifs, and a rich, saturated palette.

Authentic pieces are traditionally hand-knotted using hand-spun wool for the pile, warp, and weft, often dyed with natural vegetable and insect dyes that yield deep, enduring hues.

Authenticity is assessed through the regularity of the hand-knotting, the oxidisation of certain dark brown or black iron-mordanted yarns, the quality of the wool, and traditional regional border motifs.

These textiles provide grounding architectural weight and graphic colour, pairing effectively against minimalist hardwood flooring or layered over neutral modern broadloom carpets.

Preservation requires regular low-suction vacuuming without a rotating beater bar, professional specialist washing when necessary, and keeping the textile out of direct, prolonged sunlight.
