Antique Caucasian Soumak with Scarce 'Dragon' Design, 2nd Half 19th Century.

19th century
Description

Size: 7ft 9in x 6ft 0in (235 x 183cm).

Antique Caucasian 'dragon' soumak carpet of scarce small size format with superb colour.

2nd half 19th century.

This superb soumak is of the well known 'dragon' design, but this example one of a small group that has a clear red field with bold design and a light blue border containing a 'bird & blossom' design. The main design has two focal points / medallions, surrounded by smaller 'medallions'. The clear red field is filled with birds and mythical creatures 'dragons'. The soft blue border with a repeat bird and blossom design, frames the soumak perfectly and contrasts well with the red ground. The outer guard is a well drawn example of the 'running dog' and the inner ivory ground guards are with a fine linked star or cross design.

A related soumak from this group is published in 'Caucasian rugs - Vol 1' by Dr Ian Bennett, plate 463, pages 348-349. Bennett states, 'This variant of the so-called 'dragon' soumak is one of the least often encountered

This is an exceptional soumak that displays well as a wall hanging.

The condition is good, the soumak has been professionally backed with ivory linen, and there are Velcro hanging strips attached to the reverse. The soumak has suffered some damage in the past, and these areas are backed with colour matched linen, there are also some historic small old re-weaves that have now faded; the condition issues are reflected in the price. (See images).

The soumak would make a superb wall hanging or is suitable for light domestic use.

A Caucasian Soumak rug is a traditional flatweave textile hand-crafted in the Caucasus region, renowned for its brocaded extra-weft technique and intricate geometric motifs.

Soumak rugs are hand-woven primarily using natural wool yarns over a wool warp, employing a distinct wrapped-weft flatweave construction that creates a smooth front face and structural durability.

Authentic 19th-century pieces feature natural vegetable dyes, structural fringe remnants, uncut supplementary weft threads trailing on the reverse, and bold geometric stylisations such as dragon or medallion motifs.

These vibrant flatweaves complement both traditional and contemporary spaces by offering graphic visual structure, red and blue colour accents, and rich woven texture against hardwood or stone flooring.

Preserve antique flatweaves by placing a supportive rug pad underneath, vacuuming gently without a rotating brush, avoiding direct sunlight to prevent colour fading, and employing professional specialist cleaners.
