Antique Shashavan Kelleh

1900 - 1920
Description

A really stunning antique Shashavan kelleh carpet with exquisite colours and a striped Gendje border design. These tribal weavers from the north-eastern Persia reside in the mountainous area.  This area was home to a smaller group of tribal weavers and these diverse weavings were based on vivid geometric designs usually with medallions repeating throughout such as this piece.  The Turkish memling gul is often found on these pieces too and we can see other Caucasian rug attributes too from these pieces which are full of rainbow colours!

This amazing piece has been woven with the islamic date 1333, which translates to 1915 in our calendar.  So we know it is 106 years old.

Condition is extremely good indeed, with a lovely high soft wool pile on this tribal piece.  Some small areas of old restoration, in general it is in fantastic original condition.

Shashavan runners are sometimes known as Southern Caucasian rugs but maybe this is due to their close proximity to the Caucasus.  Historians claim the Shah Abbas Safavid (1587-1629) formed this tribe to defend western frontiers against Turkish tribes, hence how the Shah was used to form this nomad tribe.

Please request a home visit to see this beautiful tribal Shashavan Kelleh carpet at home.  We travel nationwide helping customers and interior designers find the perfect carpet, rug or runner to suit an interior.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Shahsevan rugs are tribal textiles woven by nomadic and semi-nomadic confederations in Northwest Persia and the Southern Caucasus. They are recognised for their bold geometric patterns, vibrant natural dyes, and durable hand-spun wool construction.

These rugs are typically hand-knotted using locally sourced hand-spun wool for both the pile and the foundation. The rich colour palette is achieved through traditional vegetable dyes, including madder for reds and indigo for blues.

Authentic pieces feature wool foundations, slight geometric asymmetrical variation in design, and distinct long-format proportions known as kelleh. Examining the weave density, knot type, and natural dye abrash colour variations helps verify authenticity.

A tribal kelleh rug provides visual warmth and texture to hallways, dining spaces, or living rooms. Its rich tones and geometric motifs pair effectively with neutral oak furniture, modern minimalist decor, or classic dark wood schemes.

Vacuum gently without a rotating brush to protect the pile, and rotate the rug periodically to ensure even wear. Professional cleaning using non-abrasive, pH-neutral methods is recommended to preserve natural dyes and wool fibres.
