Antique Afghan Ersari Carpet or Kelleh of Large Size and Excellent Colour, Circa 1900.

1900 - 1920
Description

Size: 17ft 3in x 7ft 4in (527 x 223cm).

Antique Afghan Ersari Turkmen carpet of large size and excellent colour.

Circa 1900.

This unusual carpet was made by the settled Ersari Turkmen of Northern Afghanistan, the long narrow shape (known as a kelleh) would suggest that it was made as an audience carpet, or commissioned for a specific room in a notable building. The carpet has an open field covered with small stars; this is framed by multiple borders in traditional designs. The carpet has a superb colour palette, it glows with a warm burgundy red. Note the original kilim end finishes at both ends.

The carpet is in excellent condition with slight even wear and good pile, this is a superb furnishing carpet that is ideal for a grand entrance hall way. There are one or two very small old historic repairs.

The carpet is suitable for heavy domestic floor use.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

A kelleh carpet is an elongated Oriental rug traditionally woven by the Ersari tribe of Turkmenistan and northern Afghanistan, characterised by repetitive geometric motifs and deep red tones.

These carpets are hand-knotted using hand-spun wool pile woven onto a wool foundation, utilising natural dyes to produce deep crimson, terracotta, and dark blue shades.

Genuine antique examples feature hand-tied asymmetrical knots, subtle variations in dye saturation known as abrash, natural wool foundations, and traditional tribal gul motifs without synthetic backings.

The long, narrow proportions of a kelleh make it ideal for wide hallways, long galleries, or under large dining tables, introducing warmth and pattern to neutral scheme settings.

Vacuum gently without a rotating beater bar, rotate periodically to ensure even wear, address spills immediately with a damp cloth, and use a professional specialist for deep cleaning.
