This Victorian fireside accessory is an English Country House piece dating from 1880, comprising a helmet-shaped brass coal scuttle and a matching coal scoop. The scuttle displays a warm brass finish with visible age wear on the dark iron interior, an overhead swing handle attached with decorative shaped brass plates, a small rear carrying handle, and a raised circular pedestal foot base. The accompanying shovel features a dark turned wooden handle joined to a metal scoop. The set measures 41 cm high, 30 cm wide, and 50 cm deep. Placed on a fireplace hearth, this functional piece serves as a traditional accessory for holding coal or logs in a living room or study.

FAQs

A helmet coal scuttle is a hearthside vessel designed during the nineteenth century with a sloped rim resembling an inverted helmet, engineered to hold and pour coal cleanly into open grates.

Traditional Victorian examples were predominantly crafted from sheet brass or copper, featuring riveted seams, cast brass carrying handles, and occasionally wooden grips on accompanying shovels.

Authentic period scuttles display hand-riveted joinery, natural surface oxidisation, functional handles with cast mountings, and a heavy-gauge metal construction rather than thin modern pressings.

An antique brass coal scuttle can be placed alongside a modern wood-burning stove to store kindling, repurposed as a decorative indoor planter, or displayed as a metallic accent on a hearth.

Maintain brass hearthware by dusting regularly with a soft cloth and applying microcrystalline wax to protect the natural patina, avoiding abrasive chemicals that strip historic patination.
