Strictly Vetted Dealers

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.

Secure Transit

Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.

The Sustainable Choice

Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

This 19th Century Victorian fireside accessory is a traditional brass coal scuttle and shovel combination in a warm brass colour. The helmet-shaped scoop rests upon a circular pedestal base, fitted with a vertical swing overhead handle and a smaller rear grip. The accompanying shovel features a turned wooden handle and a matching rounded brass bowl. Fine patination is visible across the polished metal surfaces alongside gentle signs of age. The entire piece measures 46 cm tall to the top of the handle and 51 cm long overall. This functional item is ready to place on a fireplace hearth in an English country house or traditional interior setting.

FAQs

A helmet-style coal scuttle is a nineteenth-century fireside vessel constructed with a wide, flared scoop opening reminiscent of an inverted military helmet. This shape facilitated the efficient pouring and scooping of solid fuel directly into hearth grates.

Victorian coal scuttles were typically crafted from sheet brass, copper, or painted iron. Components were joined using solid rivets or soldering, with handles frequently crafted from turned wood, ceramic, or cast brass.

Authentic period coal scuttles display hand-riveted construction, rolled rim edges, cast brass mountings, and hand-turned wood handles. Look for natural oxidation inside the scoop and subtle wear consistent with historical hearth use.

Place the scuttle adjacent to a modern log burner or open fireplace to hold kindling, pinecones, or small logs. It can also function as a decorative planter or accent piece within a traditional living room setting.

Dust the surface regularly using a soft, lint-free cloth. To maintain a polished finish, apply a specialized metal polish sparingly; to retain the aged patina, clean with warm soapy water and dry completely to prevent tarnish.
