Camphor wood chests originated in Asia and were heavily utilised during the 19th century by British military officers and merchants trading in the East. Their dense aromatic timber naturally repelled insects, making them ideal for protecting uniforms and textiles during long sea voyages.

These chests are typically constructed from solid camphor wood, prized for its distinct fragrance and grain patterns. Traditional construction often features distinctive corner dovetail joinery, brass carrying handles, and recessed escutcheons designed for durability during transport.

Authentic pieces exhibit period-appropriate joinery such as hand-cut dovetails, alongside natural patina, oxidised brass hardware, and the characteristic lingering aroma of camphor. Hand-planed boards and traditional iron or brass fixings further indicate age.

An antique chest provides practical storage while adding warmth and texture to contemporary spaces. It can function effectively as a coffee table in a living room or at the foot of a bed in a guest bedroom.

Preservation involves maintaining stable indoor humidity levels and avoiding direct sunlight to prevent timber warping or fading. The surface should be cleaned using a soft, dry cloth and occasionally treated with appropriate natural wax to nourish the wood.
