This Aesthetic Movement bench dates from 1890 and is made from warm brown walnut with a textile upholstered seat. The long rectangular seat is covered in a terracotta and gold patterned fabric finished with a red braid trim along the lower edge. The wooden frame stands on six slender, ring-turned legs detailed with finely turned reel mouldings and tapering feet. It is in good solid condition. The bench measures 50 cm high, 94 cm wide, and 37 cm deep. It suits placement at the foot of the bed in a bedroom, or acts as supplementary seating in a hallway or living room within an English country house interior.

Emerging in the late nineteenth century, Aesthetic Movement furniture emphasised artistic craftsmanship, balance, and refined detailing, frequently incorporating turned legs, rich hardwood timber, and decorative textiles.

Fine hardwoods such as walnut, mahogany, and rosewood were selected for structural frames, combined with woven damask, tapestry, or velvet upholstery fabrics.

Authentic period pieces display period-appropriate joinery techniques, natural timber patination, crisp turned or reeded leg carving, and traditional upholstery construction.

Position the piece at the foot of a bed, within a bay window alcove, or inside a hallway to add warm timber tones and textile texture to a contemporary room scheme.

Dust the timber frame regularly with a dry microfibre cloth, apply natural beeswax sparingly to maintain the finish, and vacuum upholstery fabrics gently using a soft brush attachment.
