Description

Rare Pair of Early 18th Century Antique Oak Musician Stools

A very rare pair of English period oak antique Musician’s performing stools that date to around 1720. They are both a wonderful original colour. The stools have moulded edges around the seats with chamfered legs. All pegged construction with platform stands. Would make an interesting pair of early English antique oak bedsides. They are a clever design, intended for the musicians to sit upon the stool seats with their feet up off the ground and with a small performance standing area.

Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Early 18th-century stools of this form were typically crafted for use in ecclesiastical settings, private chapels, or musicians galleries to provide support during extended periods of performance or prayer.

These items were predominantly constructed from solid native timber, such as quarter-sawn oak, utilising traditional joinery methods like mortise and tenon joints, pegged frames, and hand-planed surfaces.

Authenticity is identified through period-correct tool marks, natural timber oxidisation, hand-forged iron or wooden pegs, shrinkage cracks, and heavy wear patterns consistent with age and genuine use.

They can be utilised as sculptural accent pieces in a minimalist space, placed beside a fireplace, or used as low display plinths to showcase ceramics and sculptural objects.

Preservation requires maintaining stable indoor humidity levels, avoiding direct sunlight to protect the patina, and periodically applying microcrystalline wax to nourish the dry timber.
