Glass lustres originated in the 18th century and became particularly popular during the Victorian era as decorative mantelpiece ornaments, often designed to hold candles while using crystal prisms to catch and reflect light.

Traditional lustres are crafted from blown or pressed coloured glass, frequently enhanced with hand-painted enamel details, gilt highlights, and fitted with cut glass or crystal spear prisms suspended from metal pins.

Authentic pieces typically exhibit subtle irregularities in the glass, such as tiny air bubbles or pontil marks on the base, hand-applied enamel wear, and older faceted crystal prisms with hand-cut rather than machine-tooled facets.

These striking pieces can be used as focal points on mantelpieces, console tables, or sideboards, contrasting against neutral or minimalist backgrounds to highlight their rich colour and reflective qualities.

Clean the glass gently using a soft, damp microfibre cloth with mild soapy water, avoiding harsh chemicals that could damage the enamel or gilding. Prisms can be removed individually for careful washing and drying.
