Description

This is a scarce Georgian, English pedestal stem wine glass dating from the early 18th century, c1725.

The glass is in excellent condition for its age. This means, of course, that it shows the age related wear and tear to both the rim of the bowl and to the rim of the foot commensurate with some 300 years of use. It has a rough pontil mark on the bottom of the foot.

The glass has a rounded funnel-shaped bowl measuring 6.8 cm (2.7 inches) in diameter at the rim. The bowl is plain with a heavy base and it sits on a six-sided pedestal stem with moulded diamonds to the shoulders. The stem ends in a conical, folded foot that measures 6.6 cm (2.6 inches) in diameter. The glass is 14.5 cm (5.8 inches) in height. There are no chips, cracks, significant scratches or any obvious evidence of restoration. There is a small inclusion (probably clinker) in the metal of the stem dating from manufacture.

It is made from lead metal. It weighs 130 g. (~ 4 1/2 oz.).

Georgian pedestal wine glasses typically feature a heavy, faceted stem and a conical bowl, produced in England during the 18th century when glass excise acts influenced manufacturing.

These glasses were predominantly made from lead glass, which offered high clarity, weight, and the ability to be deeply cut and faceted.

Authentic pieces often show wear marks on the polished pontil base, subtle inclusions or bubbles within the lead glass, and characteristic tool marks from manual shaping.

Antique stemware can be displayed within a glass-fronted cabinet, on open shelving with adequate backlighting, or used sparingly for special dining occasions.

Antique glass should be washed by hand in lukewarm water using a mild detergent, avoiding harsh scrubbing and sudden temperature changes to prevent thermal shock.
