Description

This is a Georgian, mouth-blown, Prussian-shaped small spirit decanter dating from the early 19th century, c1820.

The decanter is in excellent condition for its age. This means, of course, that it shows age related wear and tear consistent with some 200 years of use.

The decanter is Prussian shaped with three applied annular neck rings. The shoulders are cut with broad petal flutes and there is a basal band of finger fluting. The base is also plain with a polished out pontil mark to its centre and measures 9.5 cm (3.8 inches) in diameter. The decanter is 18.5 cm (7.4 inches) in height without the stopper and 22 cm (8.8 inches) in height with the stopper inserted.

The stopper is of radially cut mushroom form, and is probably the original. It is of the same colour and metal as the decanter and is an excellent fit. It has a polished out pontil mark on the upper surface.

There are no chips, cracks, significant scratches or any obvious evidence of restoration. There is some very light water staining to the lowest one cm. Capacity approximately 500 ml (two thirds of a bottle of wine).

English lead glass decanter weighing in at 585 g. (~ 1 lb. 5 oz).

Georgian decanters, popular during the 18th and early 19th centuries, are characterised by heavy lead glass, hand-cut fluting, and distinctive applied glass neck rings designed for secure handling.

These pieces were typically crafted from heavy-lead flint glass, mouth-blown into moulds or free-blown, and finished with hand-cut geometric patterns and polished pontil marks on the base.

Authentic pieces feature characteristics such as a rough pontil scar on the underside, slight bubbles or impurities within the hand-blown glass, and appropriate wear consistent with age.

An antique decanter can be displayed on a mirrored tray, sideboard, or bar cart to reflect light, adding a touch of historical texture and sophistication to modern living spaces.

Antique glass should be washed by hand using warm water and mild detergent, avoiding harsh scrubbing; stubborn internal residue can be removed using specialised cleaning beads and water without abrasive chemicals.
