A firing glass is a drinking vessel from the 18th century characterised by its unusually thick, heavy base, which was designed to produce a sharp ringing sound, or fire, when slammed onto a wooden table during toasts.

Most high-quality English glasses from this era were made from lead glass, known for its clarity, weight, and high refractive index, which allowed for distinctive ring and durability.

Authentic pieces often exhibit pontil marks on the underside of the foot, characteristic tool marks, minor surface wear, and the specific greyish hue and heft associated with lead crystal from the period.

Antique stemware can be displayed within glass-fronted cabinets, used as bud vases for delicate stems, or styled on open shelving to add historical texture and reflective transparency to a room.

Antique glass should always be washed by hand in lukewarm water using mild detergent, avoiding sudden temperature changes and harsh scrubbing, and dried carefully with a lint-free cloth.
